On April 30, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, officially unveiled the Dubai Font. It is officially the first font created for and named after a city. According to their website, it is a project commissioned by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan and launched by the Dubai Executive Council in partnership with Microsoft.
On this occasion, His Highness said: “The launch of the Dubai Font to the world is a very important step for us as part of our continuous efforts to be ranked first in the digital world. We are confident that this new font and its unique specifications will prove popular among other fonts used online and in smart technologies across the world. Therefore, we urge all government entities to use the Dubai Font in their official correspondence, which is a positive shift that will boost the emirate’s competitiveness in smart technology. This should be a commitment from the Dubai Government to guarantee the dissemination and success of this initiative on a local and global level.” (Source)
According to a tweet by HH Sheikh Hamdan, the “Dubai Font is a unique project that reflects heritage & culture of UAE and reaches out to the world” with the official hashtag, #ExpressYou.
The Dubai Font was designed by Monotype’s Dr. Nadine Chahine and its design team. Asked what inspired her most while creating the Dubai Font, in a testimonial on the website, Dr. Nadine Chahine said “The spirit of Dubai, its openness and the harmony of its people… Its vision to be the modern Arab city while keeping the spirit of its tradition”.
With a font family of four (4) weights, it is available in 23 languages, integrated with Microsoft and available for download for free worldwide.
